About the foodishboy.com

Farmer? Brewer? Butcher? Baker? Imagine your incredulity at reading a CV that lists 52 different employers in the space of year. From Michelin-starred restaurants to fish and chip shops, from coffee farms in Brazil to tea plantations in Darjeeling. With no prior experience, I’ve brewed sake in rural Japan cooked a 7-course taster menu in Iceland, and joined a Los Angeles religious cult serving organic vegan food. I’ve distilled in the town of Tequila and cooked on the Orient Express to Machu Picchu.

By the time my project reaches a conclusion I will have cooked in 5 of the world’s top 50 restaurants. Not bad for a boy who only a year ago had never stepped inside a professional kitchen.

You can read more about why I’m doing this and how the project came about in my first few posts.

About Me

I’m Alex, a 26-year-old, self-taught chef, beer lover and avid food critic. After graduating from Oxford University I went on to pursue a career in the food and drink industry at teapigs. Now ready to get my hands mucky cooking in kitchens around the world.

  1. Sounds interesting…willing to give you a listen, perhaps you want to work with us for a week. We are small, but all good things…..you know! First and foremost we are foodies too…so lets chat.

  2. ola +:) it’s Fergus’s cousin Caillin from SA. He told me about your story and passed me on to your blog, sounds like an awesome trip you’re planning, definitely keen to keep track of your progress. I’m studying cheffing at the moment, so although I’m by no means an expert in the industry yet, I know of some places you could possibly spend a week in and could point you in the right direction with where to go and what to do in SA, if its on your travel list? If you’re interested, get my e-mail from Ferg and drop me a line :)
good luck with the planning! look forward to following your story

    • I’d love to travel to Africa, but unfortunately everything is one a shoe string budget and flights to and around Africa were too expensive. Iceland was a free stop over on my way to NY and I have to say one of the best weeks of this trip. A beautiful country with simply stunning food. I’d be interested to hear some suggestions for Africa though, I’m already planning my next steps and want to do something that way. Alex

  7. Hello buddy. Nice what you are doing. I wish you all the lucky to finish your project.
I´m also a food lover, student of haute cuisine in Brazil and I´m going to Milan next saturday, to work in 2 different restaurants for 1 month, but I hope to have this amazing experience as you are having.

    • Thanks. I’m sure you will love Milano. Italians have so much passion for their food I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time. Best of luck – let me know if i can help in anyway.

  8. Hello you naughty boy. Good to see you are keeping up the blog. Think you are in Tokyo at the moment (?), looking forward to your stories from there (for more than one reason obviously). Lots of love.

    • Argh how are my gold futures doing? First gain for sometime I hear. I am in rural Japan as we speak at a sake brewery working almost the same hours as you Sir. Tokyo awaits my return next week where there will be plenty fun that most certainly won’t be written about on here. Jasmine sends her love too

  9. I absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for.
can you offer guest writers to write content for yourself?

I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write about here.

    Again, awesome website!
